DEVLOG 3

DEVLOG 3

Greetings! The Chluffles are back to bring you another progress update on Handle With Care!

Since our last update, we’ve translated our project concept into document form in preparation for our Design Proposal presentation. Even though we all had a good grasp of our game direction and team dynamic, we figured writing them down would be beneficial for concretely understanding our team’s design direction, and for future reference when we look back on our process work. We broke down our project documentation into three essential sectors:

  • Team Charter: Demonstrating Chluffle’s competence!
  • Creative Brief: Sharing our vision for addressing the Housing Crisis!
  • GDD: Telling you about the GAME plan!

Team Charter

We established a few rules and guidelines for how our team will be working moving forwards. We also set up multiple meeting times to ensure we can keep up with deadlines and plan ahead.

Creative Brief

A bunch of information and statistics about the housing crisis that we will use to inform how we discuss and implement the topic in the game. It also talks a bit about our plan on how to make this game stand out from the rest of its competition.

GDD (started)

We got a strong start on our GDD, really trying to nail down what we wanted the essence of our game to be so that we could confidently pitch our idea in class, and have a great basis to begin pre-production. Perfecting the project summary and game story overview meant that we were able to think a lot about the essence of Handle with Care. Now that we are entering more of a pre-production / production phase we will be focusing on the story beats and the characters so that we can craft a seamless narrative that gets across the message we are trying to convey.

Presentation

We made a banger presentation… in our suits!

The presentation went over our plan for making the game as well as our team’s roles. Here’s an example slide:

We showed our vision for how the game will look. We plan on the game looking realistic, but with slightly incorrect proportions to make certain elements stand out.

Next Steps

For the next little bit, we’ll be starting production on the game itself!

The programmers will start work on getting the base VR framework and mechanics implemented into Unreal Engine 5. They’ll also start setting up the UE5 codebase and common practices, that should be fun!

Meanwhile, our writers will begin doing their thing, writing. First step, figure out our characters so we can get a more concrete idea on where our story is heading and how our characters will react to their memorabilia and plot events. Character bios and story beats will be the writers top concern.
